Corrupt file?

When I'm trying to boot  my Windows XP tower, I get a "<windows root> \system32\ hal.dll.  Please re-install a copy of the above file." message.

I've tried to boot in safe mode, last known config., nothing works.  Can I use a recovery disc to solve this?  What should I do?

use your windows xp cd

boot from cd

bypass the 1st repair option

use the 2nd repair option

this will rewrite windows xp files thus repairing that file

good luck

I'll never understand why the repair that you pointed out is the one that's hidden on the disk, not the one that's right out front for you to try first.  It is a much better repair option than the first repair which everyone knows wipes out all data that may be on your OS partition.

Great tip Iceman!
