I am new to IT. I installed DHCP in my laptop which is having 2003  server installed. After configuring and activating the DHCP service its not leasing IP to the system which is in the same network. I have connected another desktop with XP installed through Straight cable(cat 5), which is having two lan card, one we are using for broad bandconnection with a defferent IP range. the other is used for LAN and I am trying to get IP from DHCP to the second LAN card. But its not communicating. So what could be the issue?

Well, I'm assuming, you know what you are doing, but I might be wrong.

I'm assuming you installed the DHCP server using the management wizard of  Windows 2003 and not the DHCP client, I'm assuming you configured a scope of a X number of adress and your laptop is running with an static adress, since this is your server.

I'm assuming too your Windows XP isn't configured as a router..

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

In the right pane double click on IPEnableRouter and change its value to 0.

I'm assuming your NIC on the Win XP have DHCP client on, then,

Maybe I'm assuming too much, and you forgot to tell us you aren't using a switch, and if you are not using a switch you might use a cross-cable between your laptop and your 2nd NIC on the XP box instead of a straight cable.

Try this-http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/10112946-1204-4ff4-b52c-599c303135d11033.mspx?mfr=true

suggestions:

rule out connectivity issues

Verify client is congured for DHCP

These are easy and quick to rule out.

Is there Active Directory on your 2003 server? If yes you need to activate your adresse pool and autorize it .
