Here's a good one for you all to think about... First, my info:

XP Professional

Intel E6850

4 gigs RAM

Gigabyte MoBo

I don't remember doing anything unusual, but on bootup, I see "MBR Error 2". Then the system boots normally. No problems with anything, system runs fast, works great. But that error messsage is odd. Any ideas on how to fix it short of a complete system rebuild? (I"m not going to go there.)

Thanks in advance for any ideas on this.

dskprobe.exe, I think it comes from a Wix XP support tool pack, admin Pack or something like this. This doesn't allow any error if one value isnt correct you can change your disk to be see as FAT32 or dynamic instead of NTFS.

And it is not totally E.Z to make a drive active under the tool, that;s the kind of tool that need research in order to master the functionality.

Boot with your XP CD and start the Recovery Console.   Run the FIXMBR command.

Thank should take care of it.

Recovery console... yes, that's it. Only one problem: It asks me for a password, and I don't recall ever setting one, so I can't use the console. Anyone know how to circumvent the password routine? Then I can run the console and fix this. Thanks for the help so far.

I learned the following:

1. You can bypass the password part of recovery console simply by pressing Enter. Then I ran chkdsk /r to find and repair any problems. Then I ran FIXMBR. Now everything is working properly. Thanks for all your help.
