Back in 2000 I was working in a call center working on the Dell Technical Support account for home desktop users. Here's an account of one of the stories I have from back then:

Background: Back then one particular model was shipping with a loose motherboard power connector, so for any "no power" issue, regardless of model, we had to walk the end user through opening the computer and checking this connection.

So one day this lady called up. Her new PC wasn't turning on. So, I informer her we'd have to check the internal connections. Well this wasn't according to her master plan. She was making a big fuss about it, and kept talking about while she may not know a lot about computers, SHE had a Masters degree in Education, and that she shouldn't have to do this. Waahhhh...

So, I took her step by step through the process. I confirmed each step was done along the way. I started off by having her unplug the power cable and the like, and I walked her through opening up the case and checking the power connection. She just wouldn't stop whining. Long story short, the power connection was on snug. Reseated it to be safe of course.

So about 45 min after the call started, we're finally getting around to closing up the PC, and she's STILL whining, and still talking about her Masters degree and that she's too educated to have to do this.

We're at the home stretch. PC's all closed up, and I asked her to plug the power cable back in...

her response: "Which one's thaaaaatttt?"

You have GOT to be kidding me...

Me: "It's the black cable with 3 prongs that connects to the wall for power. Should look very familiar, as everything that runs on electricity has one..." Ok, so I didn't say that last part, but I should have :)

Her: "Ooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh........"

Yep, miss whining about being over-educated and shouldn't have to do this... DIDN'T PLUG THE COMPUTER'S POWER CABLE INTO THE COMPUTER OR THE WALL!!!

Now I hear you saying that anyone could do this... Don't forget that even back then, Dells had nice big pretty pictures that came with the computer that showed users how to plug cables in. That they're COLOR coded. That she CONFIRMED that she UNPLUGGED the POWER CABLE!!!

DEFINITELY a Bonehead User Move...

Simply amazing.  I'd expect this when electricity was the hot new thing, but in the year 2000 AD, in the civilized world?  Thanks for sharing.
